Sleepless long nights, that is what my youth was for

I had a very strange dream last night involving my sister, Lady Gaga, Marie Antoinette's village, a baby duck with a broken neck, and a violent outburst from myself.

Here's some French inspo because until I leave, I'm basically just dreaming of being there...

That's all for now!  Have a good rest-of-the-week!

For Whom the Bell Tolls

I am so, so excited to be taking off on my first ever trans-Atlantic voyage in just 3 weeks!  Obviously, I must prep in advance if I want to look chic for 2 weeks while living out of a backpack the size of my torso.

My plan is basically to bring a ton of tiny, pretty and versatile sundresses that won't take up much room and will respond to being smoothed out by my hands the same as they would a real iron.  They should be able to transition from day, with flats and cardis/scarves, to night with high heeled booties and my fur shrug.  And also work for a chilly day with tights, a leather jacket and my black minnetoka moccassin boots.

Here are a few of the lovelies I wouldn't mind bringing with me, courtesy of one of my favorite L.A. shopping institutions, Planet Blue...

The above selections meet all of my styling needs, without sacrificing fashion.  I can just see myself in the Black Label dress, sipping sangria on a balcony in San Sebastian.  In the Rebecca Taylor number (paired with my Minnetokas, nerd glasses, and my vintage purple-sequined Perry Ellis cardi), running through the pigeons in front of the Lourve, or in the sparkly Antik Batik mini dancing in a discotheque.  Does anybody call them discotheques anymore, or were my French textbooks outdated even in college?

Packing for this trip will be an adventure in itself.  I am the girl who forced my summer camp to invent a rule on suitcase limits.  For fifth graders.  I am the girl who brings an entire suitcase of just shoes.  I am the girl who brought multiple occassion and wardrobe changes on a camping trip to the Grand Canyon.  I am also the girl who hates paying for checking bags, is paranoid about losing her favorite clothes in a new country, and can't bear the idea of lugging around a two ton suitcase all over Europe.  And so, now I am becoming the girl who can live out of a backpack.

It's called downsizing, people.

Ladies of Dogtown

Cynthia Rowley will always hold a special place in my heart.  On my first visit to NYC, when I was just 15 years old and designer to me meant anything not bought at a discount chain, Cynthia Rowley's boutique was the first I wandered into.

As I flicked through the racks of clothes, trying to look as much like a socialite as I could (which was not at all), it occured to me for the first time that the creation of clothing could be an art form.  The fabrics were nicer, there was such thing as details and lines.  Everything in the store created an experience that took you into the designer's vision.  This woman liked pink and green, just like me!  And gold mirrors, and frilly dresses and sparkly shoes...ding, ding, ding!  It was like being inside of my dream closet.  I couldn't help myself.  I tried on a pair of satin brocade pants.  They fit like a glove.  I looked at the price tag and knew everyone back home (i.e.: my parents) would die if they saw a pair of pants that cost that much money.  But if I had had it, I would've bought them.  They made me feel like the NYC socialite I dreamed of being.  I knew the importance of investment pieces even back then.  Or at least the importance of telling yourself something is an investment if you're spending a lot of money on it.

And now, Cynthia Rowley has come out with a line for Roxy, the swim/surf/beachwear brand.  This is not her first foray into the masses (remember Cynthia Rowley for Target about 7 years ago?  See, told you I loved her.  Still have my quilt.), but I do like the idea of partnering with an unexpected brand.  Also, loving the surfer feeling of the pieces.  I do enjoy the idea of a surfer lifestyle, despite having practically been murdered by a surfboard the one and only time I ever attempted surfing.  Here are some of my favorite Cynthia Rowley for Roxy pieces, and some vintage CR circa 2002 RTW.  I'm pretty sure the pants I coveted are picture number 3...

Fast forward nearly 10 years later...

Topshop also has some very cute surfer-inspired looks.  My favorites are the Hibiscus bandeau bikini, the slouchy side twist vest, and the embroidered kaftan cover up

Hope the rest of this weekend is sunny!
